From part-time IT directors to FTSE 100 systems, from government partnerships to AI transformation — this is the story of a company that has always adapted, and never stopped building.
Tim founded TCB Consulting in Jersey, initially providing part-time IT directors for local companies. Jersey companies, it turned out, preferred in-house AS400 operators over qualified external professionals — so TCB quickly pivoted to what it did best: building software.
In the late 1990s, TCB began building its first major bespoke systems, most notably a portfolio of Employee Benefit Plan administration systems — the foundation of what would grow into a significant practice serving FTSE top 30 companies through Jersey's trust industry.
At peak, TCB managed Employee Benefit Trust administration systems for 15 FTSE top 30 companies, working closely with Jersey's trust companies. The Grassroots HR and payroll package launched, covering Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, and Gibraltar — paying some 10,000 employees per month.
TCB became a trusted technology partner to the Government of Jersey — a relationship that continues to this day. Over two decades, we've helped deliver critical digital services across multiple government departments.
TCB successfully acquired Itex's Business Solutions department, bringing on board experienced staff and providing a seamless transition for their clients. TCB acquired all of Itex's intellectual property, software, projects, and contracts — significantly expanding our capability and client base.
For over a decade, TCB operated as a trusted, steady-state consultancy: business process re-engineering, analysis and design, bespoke software development, and long-term system maintenance. A team of four to five professionals, deep expertise, recurring client relationships.
Our founder had a moment of clarity: the AI revolution was not coming — it had arrived. The presentation he prepared for his team was blunt: 'If we don't do this, we're going to die.' Within days, AI tools were being evaluated. Within weeks, they were embedded in the development lifecycle.
TCB has now built eight or more AI-assisted systems and websites. The entire development lifecycle — from analysis and design to build and test — is AI-augmented. Delivery is faster, quality is higher, and costs are lower. The next chapter: helping other Jersey businesses, government departments, and financial institutions navigate the same transformation.
After hearing about transforming months of work into mere minutes, it's completely understandable to be sceptical. We've all been conditioned by traditional development timelines, and these new capabilities seem almost too good to be true.
Yet the evidence is compelling. The route to this new AI-powered world demands a shift in mindset, and an open approach to tools that are redefining what's possible. Coding is no longer the bottleneck — creativity and design are. If you can imagine it, you can build it using English language prompts in any technology you want.
Our competitive advantage has always been our strength in analysis and design — where others rely on designing by prototype, we model first. In the AI era, that discipline is more valuable than ever. And, for one, we're finding it a lot more fun.
